September 2023: Quinton de Kock and Rachin Ravindra edge out to win ICC Player of the Month honors over Jasprit Bumrah

Rachin Ravindra, a young batsman from New Zealand, defeated South Africa’s opener Quinton de Kock and India’s Jasprit Bumrah to win the esteemed ICC Men’s Player of the Month title for October 2023. The 23-year-old finished the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India with the best score in the competition—more than 550 runs. It was an incredible first tournament.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-277128″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-telangana-polls-cong-issues-minority-declaration-affirms-rs-4000-cr-welfare-budget-750×563.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com telangana polls cong issues minority declaration affirms rs 4000 cr welfare budget” width=”1563″ height=”1173″ title=”September 2023: Quinton de Kock and Rachin Ravindra edge out to win ICC Player of the Month honors over Jasprit Bumrah 3″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-telangana-polls-cong-issues-minority-declaration-affirms-rs-4000-cr-welfare-budget-750×563.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-telangana-polls-cong-issues-minority-declaration-affirms-rs-4000-cr-welfare-budget-768×576.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-telangana-polls-cong-issues-minority-declaration-affirms-rs-4000-cr-welfare-budget-150×113.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-telangana-polls-cong-issues-minority-declaration-affirms-rs-4000-cr-welfare-budget.jpg 800w” sizes=”(max-width: 1563px) 100vw, 1563px” />

In the first match of the tournament, Ravindra scored an undefeated 123 against England. Later in the month, he scored an equally remarkable 116 against Australia to add to his century. Over the course of New Zealand’s first six World Cup matches, Ravindra collected 406 runs at an average of 81.20, helping the Kiwis go close to a semi-final spot in the competition.

Ravindra told ICC, “I’m very grateful to win this award.”

Both for the team and for me, this has been a memorable month. It has been very unique to be able to play a World Cup in India,” he said.

The young left-hander Ravindra praised his teammates for enabling him to thrive at the top of New Zealand’s batting order, even if he is still among the leaders in World Cup runs scored.

“Having the team behind you and having a lot of freedom to play your natural game helps a lot,” Ravindra said.

“The good thing is that I’ve got some really nice wickets to bat with, which fits my style of being aggressive and positive.”

One of the World Cup’s biggest surprises, Ravindra, hit 42 during his team’s five-wicket victory, which all but assured New Zealand a spot in the semi-finals.

“It feels a little strange,” Ravindra said to Star Sports.

“I appreciate the support, particularly for coming to Bangalore to perform. I will always be grateful for the audience singing my name.

He made the catch that made teammate Ajaz Patel the third bowler in history to capture all ten wickets in an innings in the second Test in Mumbai in 2021.

It would have taken some of the sting off of the Kiwis’ devastating 372-run defeat.

“In my career, it was a nervous time. Welcome to have accepted the catch,” he said.
