The 18-person Indian women’s hockey squad will be led by Savita Punia at the Ranchi Olympic Qualifiers

<p>The 18-member Indian women’s squad for the Olympic Qualifiers, which will take place in Ranchi from January 13 to 19, was announced by Hockey India on Saturday. Veteran goalie Savita Punia will continue to head the team, while Vandana Katariya will be her deputy. India’s goal going into the tournament is to place among the top three teams and earn a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.</p>

<p>The Ranchi FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers is a crucial competition in our path to the Paris Olympics. All of the players on the team are working hard to qualify, and it is essential that we live up to the expectations,” Indian Women’s head coach Janneke Schopman said in a statement.</p>
<p>“After giving it some thought, we have selected a team that is highly skilled and experienced across all disciplines. Additionally, Savita and Vandana have encountered several high-pressure scenarios during their careers. As the Captain and Vice-Captain, they are very qualified to lead the remainder of the crew,” she said.</p>
<p>Savita recently took home the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Award for the third time in a row, while veteran attacker Vandana made history by becoming the first Indian woman player to reach 300 caps.</p>
<p>Germany, Japan, Chile, and the Czech Republic will compete in Pool A, while India, New Zealand, Italy, and the United States are in Pool B.</p>
<p>On January 13, India will play their first game of the campaign against the United States. On January 14, they will play a match against New Zealand. On January 16, they will play Italy in the last Pool B encounter.</p>
<p>Team: Savita Punia (captain), Bichu Devi Kharibam as goalkeepers Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, and Monika are the defenders. Midfielders: Sonika, Jyoti, Beauty Dungdung, Navneet Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Neha, Salima Tete, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke Lalremsiami, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, and Vandana Katariya are the forwards.</p>
