Harry Brook, the INR 4 crore signing for the Delhi Capitals, has apparently withdrawn from the IPL 2024, claiming personal reasons. After coming home from Abu Dhabi, where the squad underwent a preparation camp before the series, in which England lost 1-4, Brook was unable to play in the India vs. England match.

Although Brook’s 55-ball century against the Kolkata Knight Riders in his first IPL season lit the stage on fire, the season concluded on a disappointing note. After Sunrisers Hyderabad spent INR 13.50 crore to get his services, he made 190 runs in 11 games for the team. He was released by SRH for the IPL 2024 auction.

Coach Ricky Ponting of DC declared Brook “one of the most talented international cricketers in the world at the moment” after bringing the aggressive English batter onto the team at the previous year’s auction.

“I had high hopes for Harry Brook. He is, in my opinion, one of the world’s most gifted international cricket players right now. He was the most important person to us today, and we got him for a lot less money than we had anticipated. So, working with him excites me much,” Ponting said in December of the previous year.

Jake Fraser-McGurk, an Australian, was on DC Radar

The Delhi Capitals are considering replacing Brook with Australian fiery opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, according to a report in Code Sports. Fraser-McGurk, 21, has featured in two ODIs so far after earning his call-ups for Australia’s T20I and ODI teams this year. With a 29-ball century in October 2023, the South Australian eclipsed AB de Villiers’ record for the quickest century in List A. He hit 158.64 at a strike rate of 257 runs in nine games during the 2023–24 Big Bash League season.

Fraser-McGurk is highly regarded by DC coach Ricky Ponting, who famously likened him to a teenage David Warner. The reason for this is that his innate skill makes me think of David Warner’s entrance to Australian cricket. I believe that everyone had doubts about Warner’s technical ability to play Test cricket when we first saw him.

“I think Jake has just as much talent as Davey did coming through, but with his talent and skill, I think it will be great for Australian cricket if they can get him into the system early and get him playing so he can figure out for himself how to succeed in all the different formats,” Ponting had stated to ESPN Cricinfo this year.

The sixth English player to withdraw from the 2024 IPL, Brook

Following the withdrawals of Mark Wood (LSG), Jason Roy, and Gus Atkinson (KKR) from the forthcoming season beginning on March 22, Brook is the fourth English player who will not compete in the IPL 2024. In response to concerns over task management, ECB removed Wood and Atkinson, while Roy withdrew for private reasons.
